HEAVY GOODS TRANSPORT REQUIRING ESCORT IN ITALY
The METRANS Permit Service team organises and carries out the mandatory escorts for large and heavy loads as well as special transports throughout Italy. METRANS also provides the appropriate escort vehicles.
SPECIAL TRANSPORTS REQUIRING ESCORT IN ITALY
Escorts are regulated by Italian road traffic regulations and can also be prescribed by the owners or administrations of the motorways/rural roads responsible for issuing the special permit. Whether an escort is necessary for a heavy or special transport depends on the overall dimensions of the special transport (TRAIN+SAL) and, in exceptional cases, also on the weight.
As a basic rule, it should be noted that escorts are subject to certain regulations:
- Motorways and country roads over 20.00 m long and 3.00 m wide.
- The number of escort vehicles and escort personnel must also be staggered according to the overall dimensions of the special transport (TRAIN+SAL).
Attention:
If the road being travelled on does not have a central reservation, an escort is generally required.
Civilian escorts must always be carried out by qualified and authorised personnel and appropriate escort vehicles. This is provided for in Art. 12, comma 3-bis of the new StVO and in accordance with the regulation for civilian escorts of special and heavy transports, laid down by D.M. 18 July 1997 and subsequent amendments.
If conditions arise that require the escort to be carried out by the police with civilian support, as provided for in the currently valid road traffic regulations, this must also be applied for.
If the technical escort is prescribed by the operators or managers of the motorways or state roads, the special and heavy goods transport must be accompanied by their personnel and vehicles.
